‘West Asia conflict may trigger inflation concerns in India’

New Delhi

Former R&AW chief Vikram Sood has warned that the ongoing West Asia conflict could lead to inflation in India if the situation worsens. He said disruptions in oil and gas supplies from the Middle East may impact India within the next two to three months.

Sood explained that India depends heavily on oil from Arab nations and LNG from Qatar. Any disruption or rise in prices could increase inflation and create economic pressure. He noted that India also relies on the Strait of Hormuz for energy supplies, making the situation more sensitive.

He described the reported attack on Iran and killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as unfortunate, stating that such actions could have been avoided. While maintaining that Israel remains India’s ally, he said the conflict has placed India in a difficult position.

Sood also pointed to the growing involvement of the United States, saying it appears to have joined the conflict alongside Israel. He suggested that both Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu may have misjudged Iran’s response, as the situation continues to escalate.

He added that the conflict is expanding, with increased military deployments raising concerns about a prolonged war. There are mixed views on whether the US and Israel are aligned on extending the conflict or seeking a quick resolution.

Meanwhile, US officials have indicated a possible timeline for ongoing military operations, while also stressing diplomatic efforts. Experts believe that any prolonged disruption in the region could directly affect global energy markets and India’s economy, making the situation a serious concern for policymakers.
