Miami
Jannik Sinner continued his impressive run on the ATP Tour, defeating Alex Michelsen in straight sets to reach the quarterfinals of the Miami Open and keep his hopes of completing the “Sunshine Double” alive.
The second-seeded Italian secured a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 (7/4) victory in one hour and 41 minutes at Hard Rock Stadium. Despite the straight-sets scoreline, Sinner was tested throughout by the 40th-ranked Michelsen, who showed resilience and pushed the match into a tense tiebreak in the second set.
After a closely contested start, Sinner began to assert control late in the opening set. He created multiple break-point opportunities before finally breaking Michelsen in the 11th game and serving out the set with authority.
Michelsen responded strongly in the second set, breaking Sinner early to surge into a 5-2 lead. However, changing conditions and the bright afternoon sunlight appeared to disrupt the American’s rhythm. Sinner capitalised, mounting a comeback to level the set and force a tiebreak.
Relying on his powerful serve, which produced 15 aces during the match, Sinner dominated the tiebreak and sealed victory with a decisive service winner. Reflecting on his performance, he credited his ability to deliver in crucial moments, especially under changing playing conditions.
With this win, Sinner moves one step closer to achieving the rare feat of winning both Indian Wells and Miami in the same season. He will next face American 19th seed Frances Tiafoe, who advanced after a three-set battle against France’s Terence Atmane.
Elsewhere, Spain’s rising star Martin Landaluce continued his dream run by upsetting Sebastian Korda, while Jiri Lehecka defeated Taylor Fritz to reach the last eight.
Other quarterfinalists include Alexander Zverev, Francisco Cerundolo, Tommy Paul and Arthur Fils. As the tournament intensifies, Sinner’s consistency and composure under pressure make him one of the leading contenders for the title.
