Messi Misses third penalty as Miami lose to Nashville

Nashville

Lionel Messi missed his third consecutive penalty as Inter Miami suffered a 3-1 defeat against Nashville SC in Major League Soccer, extending their losing run to three matches.

Messi had an early opportunity to put Miami ahead when the visitors were awarded a penalty in the third minute. However, Nashville goalkeeper Brian Schwake saved his effort. The miss marked the first time Messi has failed to convert penalties in three successive attempts.

Nashville took the lead in the 17th minute through Andy Najar. Miami appeared to have equalised through Telasco Segovia, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review for encroachment. Miami eventually found the net, but former MLS MVP Hany Mukhtar turned the game in Nashville’s favour with two goals.

The defeat extended Miami’s difficult run after they had already lost their previous two matches in the Leagues Cup, results that eliminated them from the competition before the knockout stage. The latest setback came despite Messi and Luis Suarez being involved.

Inter Miami remain second in the MLS standings with 39 points from 19 matches, including 11 wins, five draws and three defeats. Nashville strengthened their position at the top with 43 points from 19 games, having recorded 13 wins, four draws and two losses.

Miami manager Guillermo Hoyos insisted the defeat would not derail the team’s ambitions. He said the squad would continue working to improve and focus on its objectives despite the setback.

For Messi, the penalty miss adds an unusual blemish to his otherwise remarkable record, while Miami will now look to end their three-match losing streak and regain momentum in the MLS campaign.
