Argentina’s Thiago Agustin Tirante produced the biggest upset of his career by defeating Novak Djokovic in the second round of the Cincinnati Open. The world No. 50 recovered from losing the opening set to beat the fifth-ranked Serbian 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Djokovic started strongly and controlled the opening set, winning it 6-2. However, the 39-year-old struggled physically as the match progressed in hot and humid conditions. He required medical attention during the second set and appeared increasingly affected by the difficult weather.
Tirante took advantage of Djokovic’s difficulties and remained composed during the crucial stages. The Argentine secured a decisive break at 4-4 in the third set before serving out the match to complete a memorable victory. The contest lasted two hours and 44 minutes.
The result marked Tirante’s biggest victory of his career and sent him into the third round, where he will face Spain’s Martin Landaluce. Landaluce defeated Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi in three sets to advance.
For Djokovic, the defeat came in his first competitive appearance since his Wimbledon semifinal loss. The three-time Cincinnati champion had been hoping to build momentum ahead of the US Open, where he will seek a record-extending 25th Grand Slam singles title.
The early exit also marked an unusual setback for Djokovic at Cincinnati, where he has enjoyed considerable success over the years. Tirante’s victory, meanwhile, represents a major breakthrough and could provide significant confidence as he continues his campaign in the Masters 1000 event.
