RCB’s title defense faces uncertainty as Josh Hazlewood’s injury sidelines the star pacer for the IPL 2026 start.
NEW DELHI
As the cricket world gears up for the new season, former captain Faf du Plessis has sent a clear message: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) needs Josh Hazlewood to succeed. With the 2026 tournament fast approaching, fans are anxious about the fitness of the Australian star.
Hazlewood was a hero during RCB’s winning run last year, but a stubborn hamstring injury has kept him off the field since November. The 35-year-old even missed the recent T20 World Cup because his recovery is taking longer than expected. Cricket Australia is currently managing his workload, and he is confirmed to miss the first few matches this season.
Du Plessis explained that Hazlewood is irreplaceable because he performs under pressure. Whether it is taking early wickets or bowling the difficult final overs, his absence leaves a “massive hole” in the lineup. The former skipper noted that the team’s success usually goes hand in hand with having the big Aussie available to lead the attack.
Playing at Bengaluru’s home ground is notoriously tough for bowlers because the pitch favors batters so much. Du Plessis pointed out that experience is the only way to survive there. He also mentioned that having a top-tier spinner, like Krunal Pandya, is the secret ingredient RCB needs to stay on top.
RCB will begin defending their hard-earned title on March 28 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. All eyes remain on the training camp, hoping Hazlewood returns to help the team keep their crown.
