Active public participation is crucial for effective pollution control and environmental protection, said Planning and Statistics Minister and District In-charge Minister D. Sudhakar. He was speaking after inaugurating the Golden Jubilee celebration of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) at the Government Science College grounds in Chitradurga, jointly organised by the district administrations of Chitradurga and Shivamogga and the KSPCB regional offices.
The minister recalled the contribution of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who introduced landmark legislations for environmental protection and established the Pollution Control Boards in 1974. He urged citizens to extend their full support to achieve a pollution-free Karnataka.
KSPCB Chairman P.M. Narendra Swamy highlighted the need to preserve forests, improve air quality, and reduce industrial and water pollution. He warned that failure to act now would endanger future generations. He explained that the Golden Jubilee aims to spread environmental awareness across the state through district- and constituency-level activities, essay and art contests, and social media campaigns like “Create Reels on Environment and Win”.
During the event, individuals and organisations contributing significantly to environmental conservation were honoured with the Indira Priyadarshini Environment Award. Retired Justice Subhash Adi, chairperson of the State Green Tribunal Committee, emphasized that protecting air, water, and forests is a constitutional duty and vital for the planet’s survival.
The ceremony concluded with the collective reading of the Preamble to the Constitution and the distribution of awards to students for environmental competitions.
