Actor Ethan Hawke has shared details about his dramatic transformation for his upcoming film Blue Moon. In the movie, Hawke plays Broadway lyricist Lorenz Hart. To fully become the character, he shaved his head and wore brown contact lenses — a change that, he says, affected how others treated him.
Hawke noted that although some believed he used prosthetics or a bald cap, he did not. “The eyes had the biggest impact,” he said. “Everyone treated me differently. It surprised me.”
The film, directed by Richard Linklater, also stars Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Andrew Scott. It follows Hart on the opening night of Oklahoma!, as he faces a changing world and personal heartbreak.
Hawke joked that his wife, Ryan, didn’t love the look. “And I didn’t like that,” he added. Married since 2008, the couple runs a production company, Under the Influence. Hawke said working with his wife helps him avoid separating work and home life. “It makes me a lot more productive,” he shared.
Blue Moon will be in select theaters on October 17, and will release widely on October 24. Hawke continues to enjoy acting, saying, “I’m restless and like to work.”
