Heavy Rain Forecast, Schools, Colleges Closed, Degree Examinations Postponed

The heavy rains that lashed the till yesterday have subsided a bit. But the flood situation has not abated in most of the places. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts in view of the forecast of heavy rains on Tuesday.

The rivers in the district are flowing at the danger level. More than 50 people have been evacuated as a precautionary measure in Kadaba and Panemangaluru. More than 19 houses were damaged. While the Subramanya-Manjeswara state highway has been cut off due to floods.  

Heavy winds and rains have caused damage to horticulture crops and agriculture in rural areas, while electricity poles have fallen at isolated places. The plantations and fields on the banks of the river have been completely inundated. More than 10 transformers have been damaged and power outages have been reported in most places. Traffic was disrupted in many places due to falling of trees. Though the district administration has planned to shift more than 20 families from Panemangaluru, Aladka, Baddakatte, Jakribettu and Kanchikarpet areas as a precautionary measure, some have shifted to their relatives’ houses. In Kadaba, 10 people have been shifted to a care centre.

All undergraduate examinations scheduled to be held on July 25 in Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have been postponed due to heavy rains. The revised date of the postponed examinations will be rescheduled and communicated to all affiliated colleges soon. There will be no change in the remaining schedule announced earlier, the Registrar of Examinations, Mangalore University, said in a release.

Deputy Commissioner MP Mullai Mugilan has declared a holiday for Anganwadis, Schools, PU and Degree colleges in view of the forecast of heavy rains in the district.
