Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Ishwara Khandre has said that the state government is committed to the conservation of Western Ghats, which is the source of many rivers and home to hundreds of rare species.

The Minister consulted with the delegation of the Expert Committee on Western Ghats headed by Retired IFS Officer Sanjay Kumar, and said the government is committed to protecting the forests and saving the environment. At the same time, priority should be given to sustainable development and infrastructure, he said.

The State is culturally rich and our ancestors have conserved forest, hills, riverbeds, watersheds since long ago. The late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who was concerned about the environment, laid an example by bringing the Forest Protection Act and the Wildlife Protection Act with emphasis on forest conservation, wild animal conservation, tree conservation. He said that the Congress government of the state is also committed to the conservation of flora and fauna.

Sanjay Kumar spoke and explained the features of the Western Ghats, the influence of the Western Ghats on the climate and fisheries of various parts of the country.

Sukumar of Indian Institute of Science, Member Secretary of Union Ministry of Forests, Ecology, Climate Change SK Khanna, Scientists Ritesh Joshi, Suresh Kumar and Prakash, Director of the Land Survey of India were present.
