Diarrhea Cases Surge As Non-Potable Water Contamination Rises

Must read

With the onset of the monsoon season, the city of Bangalore is witnessing an increase in reported cases of diarrhea. According to the water sample testing report conducted by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the highest levels of non-potable water were found in the Bangalore South region. Out of the 692 water samples tested, 9 percent, or 59 samples, were identified as non-safe for potable purposes (NSPP), with 31 of them originating from the Bangalore South area. Dr. AS Balasunder, the Chief Health Officer of BBMP, highlighted the heightened risk of disease outbreaks during the monsoon season due to a higher possibility of water contamination. Consequently, increased monitoring and testing measures have been implemented.
Officials have been actively collecting and analyzing samples from reverse osmosis (RO) units, hotels, and public taps to assess the presence of impurities in the water. Non-potable water sources undergo chlorination and further testing to ensure safety.
To evaluate the water quality on a monthly basis, tests are conducted, and this June, approximately 2-3 percent of the collected samples were identified as NSPP. Consequently, there has been a rise in the number of individuals hospitalized due to illnesses related to water contamination. However, specific statistics regarding those seeking treatment from private hospitals are currently unavailable.
Currently, the city is witnessing an average of 18-20 reported cases of diarrhea per week. Dr. Parman V Tirumalesh from CMI Hospital stated that many of the affected individuals have experienced deteriorating health due to consuming contaminated water and eating outside.
During the monsoon season, cases of water contamination and subsequent health issues, such as diarrhea, tend to be more prevalent. The overflowing drains during heavy rains contribute to the pollution of groundwater, exacerbating problems.
