Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer has revealed that being left out of England’s FIFA World Cup 2026 squad was a major disappointment but believes the setback has strengthened his determination to perform at the highest level this season.
Palmer was among the surprise omissions from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad despite his impressive contribution during England’s run to the UEFA Euro 2024 final. The 24-year-old admitted that Chelsea’s inconsistent Premier League campaign last season played a part in his exclusion from the national team.
Reflecting on the disappointment, Palmer said missing out has motivated him to work harder and prove his worth. He added that setbacks are part of a footballer’s journey and should be used as fuel for improvement rather than discouragement.
Although disappointed to miss England’s World Cup campaign, Palmer said the extended summer break gave him valuable time to recover physically and mentally. After enjoying seven weeks away from football, he believes he is refreshed and fully prepared for the new season.
Chelsea will begin the campaign under new head coach Xabi Alonso following a disappointing 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season. Palmer praised Alonso and his coaching staff, describing their arrival as a positive change that has brought fresh ideas and renewed enthusiasm within the squad.
The midfielder also expressed delight at Chelsea’s signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a British-record transfer. Having grown up together in Manchester City’s academy and represented England at youth level, Palmer said he is excited to reunite with one of his closest friends at Stamford Bridge.
