Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has stressed the need for having standardized disaster management system in the event of natural calamities and disasters.
Participating in the launch of a Mobile App for Upscaling Aapda Mitra scheme and MIS organised by the Union Home Ministry and KSDM, he said Karnataka has faced natural disasters and calamities several times in the past and felt it was necessary to have standardized disaster management system and also solve the problems in disaster management.
The Chief Minister said it would be very useful if the people could be provided with advance warning in the event of natural calamities and disasters as they could be predicted in advance with the technological advances instead of rushing with rescue efforts after the event.
While natural disasters and calamities could not be prevented, Bommai said the scientific advances make it possible to provide accurate advance warnings and thereby minimize the loss of lives. It will be useful to involve the people in the rescue efforts and ensure people’s participating, he said.
The Chief Minister said non-governmental agencies and volunteers can play a big role in the disaster management efforts and advocated the need for providing training facilities. The Aapda Mitra Mobile App must be put to effective use, he said.
Bommai used the opportunity to praise Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his foresight and farsightedness in doing what was not even attempted during the last 70 years by involving community participation in disaster management. In Karnataka, the disaster management team was functioning very effectively and efficiently under the leadership of Revenue Minister R Ashok, he said.
