Carlos Alcaraz’s participation in the French Open is now in serious doubt after the defending two-time champion revealed that a right wrist injury continues to trouble him, with crucial medical tests scheduled in the coming days to determine his fitness for the Grand Slam next month.
The 22-year-old Spaniard, who has already won seven Grand Slam titles, said he remains uncertain about his recovery timeline and admitted that his return to full competition will depend entirely on upcoming scan results and medical assessments.
Alcaraz withdrew from the Madrid Open last week and was seen attending the Laureus Awards in Madrid with his right wrist immobilised, raising further concerns about the severity of the injury.
He said the next medical evaluation would be decisive in shaping his immediate future on the tour and whether he can defend his French Open crown.
He explained that his team is doing everything possible to ensure recovery progresses smoothly, but emphasised the importance of patience during this critical rehabilitation phase.
The injury first surfaced during his recent campaign in Barcelona, where he required treatment on his wrist during a straight-sets victory over Otto Virtanen before later withdrawing from the tournament.
Alcaraz admitted that the uncertainty has made the past few days challenging, but insisted he is trying to remain positive while waiting for further clarity on his condition.
He added that multiple tests will be conducted in the coming days, which will determine whether he can resume training and prepare for Roland Garros.
The French Open remains his most successful Grand Slam, and any extended absence would significantly impact his title defence and ranking momentum heading into the clay season.
Following Madrid, the next major tournament on the calendar is the Italian Open, where Alcaraz triumphed last year, but his participation there also now depends on recovery progress.
Despite the setback, he was honoured on Monday as Laureus World Sportsman of the Year, recognising his outstanding achievements over the past season.
Alcaraz said he is focused on staying mentally strong during the recovery process, even as uncertainty grows over his availability for one of the biggest tournaments of the year.
