Food schemes key driver of local growth, job creation

Blurb: India’s PLISFPI scheme has distributed ₹2,162 crore in incentives, creating 3.39 lakh jobs and boosting food processing capacity to turn India into a global “food basket.”

NEW DELHI

India’s food processing sector is seeing a massive surge in growth thanks to a government initiative known as the PLISFPI scheme.

Officials announced that the program has already distributed ₹2,162 crore in incentives to businesses, helping the country become a global leader in food production.

The scheme has successfully expanded India’s food preservation capacity by 34 lakh metric tonnes per year. Beyond just infrastructure, the impact on people is significant. So far, the project has created nearly 3.39 lakh jobs, easily beating the government’s original target of 2.5 lakh. This surge in employment offers new opportunities for workers across 274 different project locations nationwide.

Small businesses are also getting a major helping hand. Out of 165 approved applications, 69 belong to small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). These smaller shops are now better integrated into the global supply chain, allowing them to compete on a much larger scale. To encourage healthier eating, the government even set aside ₹800 crore specifically for companies making millet-based snacks and ready-to-eat meals.

The results are showing up in international markets too. Processed food now makes up over 20% of India’s total agricultural exports, a big jump from a decade ago. By encouraging local manufacturing and global branding, the government aims to turn India into a “food basket” for the world. With more investment pouring in, the sector is well on its way to hitting its production goal of over ₹33,000 crore by 2027.
