India’s two-wheeler sales hit record 22 million units

NEW DELHI

India’s two-wheeler industry has just made history. According to a new report, domestic sales hit an all-time high of 22 million units in the 2026 fiscal year.

This milestone marks a massive 11% jump in volume compared to the previous year, proving that the country’s love for scooters and motorcycles is stronger than ever.

The year ended with a bang, as sales in March alone surged by nearly 29%. Experts credit this boom to several factors, tax reforms (GST), lower interest rates, and extra cash in the pockets of rural buyers. Whether people were looking for basic commuter bikes or high-end “aspirational” models, there was a bike for everyone.

Electric vehicles (EVs) also stole the spotlight. Retail sales for electric two-wheelers jumped over 47% in March, as more riders made the switch to green energy. By the end of the fiscal year, electric models accounted for nearly 10% of all monthly sales, a significant step toward a cleaner future on Indian roads.

Looking ahead, the road might have a few bumps. Analysts predict growth will slow to about 3 – 5% next year due to a weak monsoon outlook and the “El Nino” weather pattern, which often hurts rural spending. Additionally, conflicts in the Middle East could pose risks to exports and parts supplies. Still, with Indian brands gaining global fame and exports rising by 23%, the industry remains in a very strong position.
