Bangladesh ends ban on IPL cricket broadcasts

Dhaka

In a major win for cricket fans, Bangladesh has officially cleared the way for the Indian Premier League to return to television screens. Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan confirmed that the government has dropped previous restrictions, choosing to separate sports from regional politics.

The move marks a significant policy shift from the previous interim administration. That government had blocked IPL broadcasts following a heated row involving the BCCI and Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman. However, Minister Swapan emphasized that the new leadership views the tournament through a “commercial lens” rather than a political one. He stated that any local or international network, including Star Sports, is now free to apply for broadcasting rights without fear of being blocked.

“We will not bar anyone,” Swapan noted, adding that the government would consider all applications positively. This open-door policy has been welcomed by the Cable Operators Association of Bangladesh. Spokesperson Rezaul Karim Lablu clarified that since the old directives are no longer valid, operators will not interfere with IPL feeds unless specifically told otherwise by the current authorities.

The lifting of the ban ensures that millions of fans in Bangladesh can once again follow their favorite stars and teams in real-time. By prioritizing the spirit of the game and its massive economic value, the government has turned the page on a tense chapter in sports diplomacy. The decision is expected to boost viewership and bring a sense of normalcy back to the region’s cricket-crazy public.
