Located in the Hoodi village under the Mahadevapura zone, the Hoodi Lake in Bengaluru was rejuvenated by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore last year. The waterbody was restored under the Bengaluru Mission 2022 programme.
A BBMP official from the lakes department told the Indian Express, “There were plans to construct a walking path as well but there is a huge shortage of funds. We have diverted the sewage and fenced the lake. A home guard has also been deployed to oversee the upkeep of the lake. There is no plan to get treated water to the lake.” (sic)
Hoodi Lake Revival
“The lake is in a good state and it is free from sewage and is properly fenced. The concentration should not be more on the beautification of the lake. Since the lake is not connected to the sewage treatment plant (STP), there is no scope of treated water coming to the lake. It is completely dependent on rainwater. BBMP should work on getting the rainwater towards the lake,”Raghotham was quoted by the Indian Express as saying.
The BBMP removed the encroachments at the lake before the restoration work. But a high-tension cable tower that has been installed in the middle of the waterbody cannot be removed, the BBMP officials said.
Benagluru Lakes’ Restoration
In 2020, former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa announced the ‘Bengaluru Mission 2022 programme’ to revitalise Bengaluru into a sustainable, connected city, enhancing the quality of life of its citizens by 2022.
Four major areas were identified for the rehaul plan for Bengaluru: Enbaling faster commute, Swachacha Bengaluru, Hasiru Bengaluru and connecting citizens to the city.
Under the waterway beautification part of the programme, the BBMP had planned to restore 25 lakes in Bengaluru and to monitor the water quality of 20 lakes. The idea was to enhance water quality and improve the biodiversity around lakes.
