Former Pakistan cricket captain Azhar Ali has been named the Head of Youth Development by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). This decision came after a structured recruitment process, the board confirmed on Friday.
Azhar, who is already part of the PCB Men’s National Selection Committee, will now play a bigger role in nurturing young talent. A seasoned cricketer, Azhar started his journey in the 2002 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup before advancing to the senior team. Over a career spanning 12 years, he played 97 Test matches and 53 ODIs, even leading Pakistan in nine Tests and 31 ODIs. He was a key part of the team that won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017.
In his new role, Azhar will focus on building a strong foundation for Pakistan cricket. His responsibilities include creating youth development plans, strengthening grassroots programs, and setting up talent pathways. He will also work closely with regional cricket associations, guide players in the PCB’s Pathways Programme, and organise workshops to prepare young athletes for both on- and off-field challenges.
Speaking about his appointment, Azhar said, “It’s an honour to lead this crucial area of our cricket system. Having come through similar ranks, I know the value of grassroots development. We’ve already made progress, and I’m excited to build on it with my colleagues. Our aim is to spot talent and prepare them to excel on the international stage.”
