Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur has announced plans to open an AI-driven film school in Mumbai’s Dharavi slums, as reported by sources. Kapur, who has been running ‘The Dharavi Project’ with A.R. Rahman, which offers musical education in hip-hop and rap to local children, is now expanding his efforts to cinema.
Kapur shared that many of the children involved in ‘The Dharavi Project’ have risen to national fame, and the success of the initiative has inspired people to encourage him to establish a film school in the area. With the rise of AI in filmmaking, Kapur sees it as the ideal time to take this step, calling AI the “most democratic technology” that allows anyone to create short films using AI tools.
While specific details on the school’s launch are yet to be confirmed, Kapur mentioned that work on the project has already begun.
Known for his iconic films such as ‘Masoom’ (1983), ‘Mr. India’ (1987), and ‘Bandit Queen’ (1994), Kapur recently announced a sequel to ‘Masoom’, slated to begin production in 2025.
