Alan Jones, a former prominent Australian broadcaster and national rugby coach, was arrested on Monday following allegations of indecent assault spanning several decades.

The 83-year-old was detained by police in New South Wales (NSW) after an extensive investigation into claims of sexual assault and inappropriate touching, with incidents reportedly occurring between 2001 and 2019. In March, the NSW Police established a special task force, which led to Monday’s arrest after executing a search warrant at Jones’s luxury apartment in Sydney.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb confirmed that the investigation had been extensive and thorough. Jones, who retired from his long career in radio in 2020, was known for hosting one of Sydney’s top-rated breakfast shows from 2002 to 2020. Before his broadcasting career, he had worked as a teacher, speechwriter for former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, and head coach of the Wallabies, Australia’s national rugby union team.

Allegations surfaced that Jones exploited his influential positions in both education and media to target young men. Jones has denied all allegations.
