TUMAKURU
Despite the ongoing drought, crops like ragi, navane, and saame were growing well in the region. However, recent heavy rains and cloudy weather have caused significant damage to the crops.
This year’s delayed monsoon prevented farmers from sowing crops on time. Once the rains began, they planted ragi, navane, and other grains, but the rains became erratic again. It wasn’t until the final stages that steady rainfall arrived. Early growth was promising, with crops turning lush and green after the application of urea fertilizer.
However, heavy rains soon caused the crops to bend and lodge. In recent days, the unexpected rains have worsened the situation, causing crops to flatten and rot due to excess moisture in the soil. Farmers are now worried that the continued rainfall may lead to total crop loss, leaving them with little hope for the season’s yield.
