Shillong
A day after withdrawing support from the BJP-led government in Manipur, National People’s Party (NPP) leader and Meghalaya CM Conrad K. Sangma expressed a lack of confidence in CM N. Biren Singh’s administration. He called for urgent action from the Centre to address the ongoing unrest and restore peace in the state, emphasizing the need to rebuild public trust in the government.
Speaking in Shillong, Sangma clarified that the NPP’s withdrawal of support was specifically from the Biren Singh-led government, not from the BJP or the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). He noted that if a leadership change led to positive reforms, the NPP might reconsider its stance.
Sangma explained that the NPP had initially supported the state government in hopes of restoring peace. However, after recent worsening violence, the party decided to pull its support. He highlighted that the leadership had failed to address the trust deficit, which hindered efforts for peace. Sangma added that while violence was not the answer, sentiments were running high in the state.
Despite the withdrawal, the NPP, which is the second-largest party in Manipur, committed to cooperating for peace. The decision follows ethnic violence that has escalated in Manipur, causing significant suffering and loss of life.
