Hubli
The Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has introduced two litter-picking machines called Jatayu to improve cleanliness in the city. These machines were tested on narrow streets and were found to be effective in clearing waste. Designed to manage various types of litter, the machines are equipped with telescopic hoses to reach and clean areas like parking spaces, waste collection points, and recreational spaces.
While mechanical sweeping has been commonly used, some locations, including parking areas, have posed challenges. The Jatayu litter picker helps address these issues by vacuuming different types of waste, including plastic cups, plates, glass, paper, bottles, and coconut shells. The equipment is also suitable for cleaning bins, pavements, and parks.
According to HDMC’s Solid Waste Management Department, each machine is equipped with a 20-foot hose that generates air speeds of 5,000 feet per minute. This allows the machine to collect up to 500 liters of dry or wet waste in just seven minutes. The Jatayu machine, which is an Indian-made product, was designed to meet local requirements. It is compact and can be attached to small trucks, enabling quick and efficient cleaning in different areas.
The equipment includes reusable collection bags, which can be easily changed, and operates without visible dust discharge due to cleanable filters. Various attachments are also available to expand the machine’s functions, making it a versatile tool for maintaining cleanliness in all weather conditions.
