The Tourism Department plans to develop Kamini Island, located near the Blue Flag-certified Padubidri Beach, with a focus on eco-friendly initiatives aimed at attracting more visitors. Assistant Director CU Kumar explained that the development would prioritize environmental sustainability, considering the island’s proximity to the Blue Flag beach. Proposed enhancements include a hanging bridge, nature trails, and eco-friendly food courts serving traditional cuisine. Visitors will also be able to reach the island via pedal boats or kayaking, Kumar added.
The project is estimated to cost between Rs 3 crore and Rs 4 crore. Meanwhile, foot traffic at the Padubidri Blue Flag Beach has seen steady numbers. Vijay Shetty, the manager of the beach, noted that tenders for food courts and water sports activities have been awarded to private parties. The recent addition of three coracles has been well-received by visitors, and three more shelters are expected to be completed by November 20.
Currently, the facilities at the Blue Flag Beach can accommodate up to 2,500-3,000 visitors per day, though attendance remains lower than other district beaches due to user fees and activity restrictions. Shetty observed that while most visitors initially came from Mangaluru, about 40% now come from other districts.
To promote a healthy lifestyle and tourism, a Beach Carnival will be held on November 23-24. The event will include the National Sea Swimming Championship, a sea marathon, and cultural activities, with an emphasis on environmentally friendly practices.
