Indian shooters Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Sanjeeta Das secured a gold medal in the 10m air rifle mixed team event at the World University Shooting Championship on Wednesday. This victory marked India’s third gold medal in the tournament, lifting the country’s spirits and showcasing their talent in the shooting sport.
Aishwary, an Olympian, had faced challenges earlier in the championship. He finished fifth in the men’s 10m air rifle event and claimed a silver in the 50m rifle 3-positions. However, he rose to the occasion with partner Sanjeeta, as they overcame South Korea’s Kim Hyobeen and Lee Junhwan with a close 17-15 score in the final, bringing India another proud moment.
The Polish team of Julia Piotrowska and Maciej Kowalewicz defeated India’s second duo, Manini Kaushik and Umamahesh Maddineni, 16-0 in the bronze-medal match. In the qualification round, Sanjeeta and Aishwary scored a combined 633.0 points to reach the final, narrowly ahead of South Korea’s 631.7 points. Meanwhile, Manini and Umamahesh placed fourth in qualifying with 628.7 points but fell short against Poland’s score of 629.8.
This victory adds to India’s impressive performance in the championship, as skeet shooter Bhavtegh Singh Gill won gold on Tuesday, and Palak Gulia and Amit Sharma earned the country’s first gold in the air pistol mixed team event on Sunday. The event, hosted by Manav Rachna International Institute of Research and Studies, features 220 shooters from 23 countries.
