Flamengo secured their fifth Copa do Brasil trophy on Sunday night with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Atletico Mineiro, sealing a 4-1 win on aggregate. The deciding goal came from Ecuadorian winger Gonzalo Plata, whose late strike at Arena MRV confirmed Flamengo’s dominance in the two-legged final.
The match began with Flamengo applying pressure early on, as Giorgian de Arrascaeta created a clear chance for Gerson, but Atletico’s goalkeeper, Everson, was up to the task. Atletico Mineiro responded with their own threat, with Hulk testing Flamengo’s keeper, Rossi, on a powerful free kick in the 13th minute. The first half saw both teams battling intensely in midfield, with few clear-cut chances until Flamengo’s defense managed to contain Atletico’s late aerial assault, keeping the game goalless at halftime.
In the second half, both sides continued to press, with Flamengo close to scoring when Bruno Henrique’s speed challenged Atletico’s defense, forcing another sharp save from Everson. Atletico’s best chance came through Alan Kardec, but the forward failed to capitalize, leaving the match open for Flamengo’s decisive play.
In the closing minutes, Bruno Henrique set up Plata, who dribbled past the defense and lobbed the ball into the net, sealing Flamengo’s victory and fifth Copa do Brasil title. Flamengo’s manager, Filipe Luis, who took charge in October, praised his team’s performance and acknowledged the contributions of his predecessor, Tite.
Flamengo’s Copa do Brasil titles now include victories in 1990, 2006, 2013, 2022, and 2024.
