Sri Lanka’s application to join the BRICS alliance remains under consideration, clarified the Foreign Ministry on Sunday, dispelling local media reports that the bid had been rejected. The Ministry confirmed that Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister, Vijitha Herath, has communicated the nation’s interest in joining BRICS to counterparts in member countries.
According to the Ministry, BRICS is reviewing membership requests from multiple countries, including Sri Lanka. “Pending requests for membership from many countries, including Sri Lanka, will be considered by BRICS member countries in due course,” stated the Ministry’s release.
The Ministry also announced that Sri Lanka’s expressed interest in joining the BRICS-led New Development Bank (NDB) has been positively received. The NDB, established by BRICS nations, aims to support infrastructure and sustainable development projects in emerging economies.
BRICS, initially formed by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, later expanded to include South Africa in 2011 and recently admitted four additional members as part of its latest expansion.
