Tensions escalated in Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, on Sunday following violent clashes involving supporters of the Awami League during a protest march commemorating Noor Hossain Day. Several Awami League activists were reportedly beaten near the party’s central office on Bangabandhu Avenue.

Noor Hossain, a political activist and leader of the Awami League’s youth front, the Jubo League, was killed on November 10, 1987, during the anti-Ershad movement. His death became a symbol of resistance against authoritarian rule. The Awami League had organized the protest march at Shaheed Noor Hossain Square (Zero Point) to honor his sacrifice and call for the restoration of democratic governance, following the toppling of Sheikh Hasina’s government in August.

However, the interim government, led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, swiftly rejected the Awami League’s request for permission to hold the rally. Yunus’ administration denounced the party, calling it a “fascist” organization and vowed not to allow the protest to take place.

In addition to the Awami League’s rally, the anti-discrimination student movement held a counter-gathering, demanding the trial of Awami League leaders. With concerns over potential violence, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) deployed 191 platoons of security forces across Dhaka and nationwide to maintain order on Noor Hossain Day.
