Flights between Australia and Indonesia’s Bali have been halted due to volcanic ash clouds from Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province. Australia’s major airlines, Qantas, Virgin Australia, and Jetstar, grounded flights on Tuesday and Wednesday, citing safety concerns after the eruption blanketed the region in ash.
Jetstar canceled all flights from Australia to Bali’s Denpasar Airport from Tuesday evening, with an update expected by 2 p.m. Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT) on Wednesday. The airline plans to operate additional flights, including a Boeing 787 service, to help clear the backlog if conditions improve.
Qantas experienced some delays, with one Sydney departure rescheduled for Wednesday afternoon and another Melbourne flight planned for later that day. Virgin Australia also canceled four flights to and from Bali on Tuesday, stating, “The safety of our guests and crew is our highest priority.”
Travelers are encouraged to check airline websites for updates as the situation develops. Bali remains a top travel destination for Australians, making the disruption a significant setback for many passengers.
