Taiwan’s defense command held it’s first-ever night-time live-fire exercises on Thursday, aimed at preparing its military for potential nighttime invasion threats from the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA). The drills took place in Penghu County and involved various military branches in a simulation of a surprise assault under the cover of darkness, Taiwan reported on Saturday.

During the exercise, the Taiwanese military deployed CM-21 armored vehicles and M60A3 tanks, with troops using night-vision equipment. Live ammunition was fired along the beaches to simulate a possible land assault, while flares were used to illuminate the sky in response to a simulated aerial invasion involving drones. The navy also participated, executing scenarios where PLA naval forces might disguise themselves as fishermen, prompting the army to conduct land-to-sea fire exercises.

The drills spanned 18 different locations, with over 32,000 rounds of ammunition used. Army officials noted the challenges of nighttime operations, including strong winds and visibility issues.

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting Taiwan’s democracy and national security, particularly in light of China’s extensive military activities around the island. This announcement followed China’s declaration of military drills in the Taiwan Strait, which were perceived as a warning to advocates of Taiwanese independence. Taiwan has been self-governed since 1949, but China views it as part of its territory and insists on eventual reunification.
