Defending champions Mumbai secured a convincing nine-wicket victory over Maharashtra in their second Group A match of the Ranji Trophy at the BKC ground on Monday. After a disappointing loss to Baroda in their opener, Mumbai bounced back, earning six points to kickstart their campaign.
Chasing a modest target of 74 on the final day, Mumbai resumed at 13/0. Despite losing Ayush Mhatre early for 15, Prithvi Shaw (39 off 36 balls) and Hardik Tamore (21 off 26 balls) guided the team to victory in just 13.3 overs.
The match swung decisively on the first day when Mumbai bowled Maharashtra out for 126, thanks to a disciplined bowling effort. Mumbai then piled on 441 runs, driven by 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre’s brilliant 176 and Shreyas Iyer’s aggressive 142.
Maharashtra showed more fight in their second innings, with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ankit Bawne scoring centuries, and Sachin Dhas contributing 98. However, their efforts couldn’t overturn the damage from the first innings, as they managed only 388, setting Mumbai a small target.
