The Indian junior men’s hockey team continued its winning streak at the Sultan of Johor Cup, defeating Great Britain 6-4 in a thrilling encounter on Sunday.
India’s scoring was spearheaded by Dilraj Singh and Sharda Nand Tiwari, who each netted two goals. Mohd Konain Dad also contributed to the scoreboard with a goal in the 7th minute, while Manmeet Singh added another in the 26th minute.
Great Britain’s Rory Penrose opened the scoring early in the second minute from a penalty corner and added another in the 15th minute. Michael Royden scored twice for Great Britain as well, once in the 46th minute and again in the 59th.
Despite an early setback due to defensive errors, India quickly regrouped, starting with Dad’s equalizer. Dilraj then scored in the 17th minute, followed by a goal from Sharda Nand in the 20th minute, giving India a 3-2 lead. Manmeet Singh further extended the lead to 4-2 before the end of the first half.
In the fourth quarter, Great Britain narrowed the gap to 4-3, but India responded with Sharda Nand’s drag flick from a penalty corner, and Dilraj added a field goal shortly after, bringing the score to 6-3. Although Great Britain managed to score again through Royden, India held on to their lead, securing a 6-4 victory.
This win solidifies India’s strong performance in the tournament, following their victory against Japan in the opening match.
