New Zealand secured a historic win over India, defeating the hosts by eight wickets in the first Test at Bengaluru on Sunday, marking their first victory on Indian soil since 1988. With this win, New Zealand takes a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Chasing a target of 107, New Zealand faced early trouble when Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Captain Tom Latham for a duck in the first over. Will Young and Devon Conway then steadied the innings before Conway fell for 17 to Bumrah. Rachin Ravindra joined Young, guiding New Zealand to 110/2 in 27.4 overs, with Young unbeaten on 48 and Ravindra on 39.
Earlier, India took a 106-run lead after scoring 462 in their second innings. Notable contributions came from Sarfaraz Khan (150), Rishabh Pant (99), and Virat Kohli (70). However, a late collapse, triggered by Matt Henry (3/102) and William O’Rourke (3/92), saw India lose seven wickets for just 54 runs.
New Zealand’s first innings total of 402 was built on Rachin Ravindra’s 134 and Devon Conway’s 91. A crucial 137-run partnership between Ravindra and Tim Southee (65) helped recover from 233/7.
In India’s first innings, they struggled in bowler-friendly conditions, getting bowled out for 46 runs. Henry (5/15) and O’Rourke (4/22) led New Zealand’s attack, dominating the Indian batting.
