Retired gymnastics star Dipa Karmakar has expressed concern over the current generation of Indian gymnasts, during a panel discussion at the ‘Beyond the Finish Line’ event on Friday night, stating they lack the passion that fueled her success. Dipa, who made history as the first Indian woman gymnast to compete in the Olympics and narrowly missed a medal in Rio 2016, emphasized that many young athletes seem focused on short-term gains rather than long-term commitment to the sport.

During a panel discussion at the ‘Beyond the Finish Line’ event, Dipa remarked, ‘I cannot see this junoon (passion) much in the current generation. They look for instant success.’ She highlighted her own dedication and that of fellow gymnast Pranati Nayak, who has also achieved international recognition.

The 31-year-old noted the challenges within the national federation, which have affected the sport’s development. She cited issues such as unclear selection criteria for events, which could deter potential talent.

Dipa, who recently won a gold medal in vault at the Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships, announced her retirement due to injuries, including two ACL surgeries. Looking ahead, she aims to contribute to gymnastics by becoming a coach or supporting the next generation of gymnasts from her home state of Tripura. ‘I want to put Tripura on the Indian sporting map and show that women can excel in gymnastics,’ she stated.
