Olympic bronze medallist Gagan Narang on Friday has expressed pride in the Indian government’s efforts to enhance sports governance through the newly proposed National Sports Governance Bill. This bill aims to establish a transparent and robust framework for managing sports in India.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports released the draft bill for public feedback as part of a consultation process on Thursday. Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced the government’s ambition to transform sports governance as part of the larger goal of making India a developed nation by 2047, marking a century of independence. Discussions have already taken place with 49 sports federations to gather suggestions for the bill.
Narang believes that the upcoming Draft National Sports Governance Bill 2024 will be a milestone for India as the nation continues its journey of becoming a sporting superpower.
Key features of the bill include the establishment of a Sports Regulatory Board to oversee National Sports Federations, ensuring compliance with governance and ethical standards. It also mandates athlete representation in decision-making bodies and introduces a ‘Safe Sports Policy’ to protect athletes from harassment.
