Gambhir backs aggressive approach on NZ series

Must read

India head Coach Gautam Gambhir on Monday emphasized that he will support a ‘high risk, high reward’ approach in Test cricket, even if it means occasional failures like being bowled out for 100. This was evident in India’s recent win over Bangladesh in Kanpur, where they adopted a more aggressive style, chasing down a target despite limited time due to rain.

Ahead of the three-match series against New Zealand starting Wednesday, Gambhir said, ‘If our players can score 400-500 runs in a day by playing naturally, why hold back? We’ll back them to take risks, even if it means sometimes failing.’ He stressed that this approach aims to push for wins, though the team will adjust as needed.

Gambhir also emphasized the importance of adaptability, stating, ‘We want to be a team that can score quickly but also bat for two days when required. That’s growth in Test cricket.’ He believes in his players’ ability to adapt to any situation.

Gambhir acknowledged New Zealand’s quality, saying, ‘They are a tough side with players who can challenge us. We respect them but don’t fear anyone. Our goal is to play hard and selfless cricket.’

Despite a challenging schedule ahead, including a series against Australia, Gambhir remains focused on the immediate task. ‘Right now, our focus is on the first Test against New Zealand on Oct 16. It’s important to stay present and prepare for what’s in front of us,’ he concluded.
