Construction of 634 rainwater pits completed in BBMP parks

Must read

Preeti Gehlot, the Special Commissioner (A.P.H.Y), announced that 634 ingot boreholes have been constructed in Bengaluru’s parks to collect rainwater and enhance groundwater levels. These efforts aim to prevent water wastage during rainfall.

Under the jurisdiction of the BBMP, 1,280 parks will eventually have ingot pits installed. The Horticulture Department is implementing this initiative in phases, with plans to construct around 1,000 additional pits by 2024-25.

Each ingot pit measures 12 feet long and 5 feet wide, capable of collecting approximately 4,000 liters of rainwater. The pits are designed scientifically, featuring an iron screen at the entrance to block debris and sticks from entering. A cement ring with a circumference of 4 feet is also used, filled with 40 mm gravel from the depth to the surface.

The construction of these pits allows rainwater to be absorbed directly into the ground, contributing to the increase of the water table in the parks. This initiative aims to effectively manage rainwater and improve local groundwater resources.
