The ‘Secondary Solid Waste Transfer and Automated Waste Sorting Unit’ in Koramangala has been operational since April 2024, successfully managing waste disposal in the city. This unit handles approximately 150 to 160 metric tonnes of solid waste each day from multiple wards.
Seven hook loader vehicles are used to facilitate waste transfer, with each vehicle containing two capsule-type containers. Auto tippers directly load waste into these capsules, which can hold 16 to 18 tonnes of compressed waste. This method significantly reduces the reliance on traditional compactor vehicles. The unit operates from 6 am to 4 pm, allowing ample time for waste collection and disposal.
Waste is sorted into raw and mixed categories, with raw waste sent to the Chikkanagamangala Waste Treatment Plant. The automatic sorting system has the capacity to sort around 40 tonnes of waste daily. CCTV cameras record all waste transfers, noting details such as vehicle number plates and the weight of the waste.
Since its opening, the unit has received over 20,000 tonnes of waste. Plans are in place to establish similar units in all assembly constituencies of the city. The successful operation of this facility aims to improve solid waste management and promote cleaner public spaces in the city.
