AR Rahman celebrates Seventh National Award for ‘Ponniyin Selvan I’

Celebrated composer AR Rahman believes that good films transcend borders, regardless of language. Rahman, who has composed music across Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Malayalam industries in his 32-year career, recently attended the 70th National Film Awards in New Delhi. He received the award for Best Background Score for Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film ‘Ponniyin Selvan I’.

Speaking to sources, Rahman said, A good film is universal. Whether it’s Tamil, Hindi, Punjabi, or Malayalam, there are no borders for a great story.

This marks Rahman’s second National Award for background score and his seventh overall. Reflecting on the achievement, Rahman expressed gratitude towards filmmaker Mani Ratnam, who gave him his first break with ‘Roja’ in 1992, which also won him his first National Award.

I’m very grateful to God and the filmmakers who have given me these opportunities, especially Mr. Mani Ratnam, Rahman added. The duo has collaborated on several notable films, including ‘Bombay’, ‘Dil Se..’, and ‘Guru’, and are set to work together again on the upcoming project ‘Thug Life’, starring Kamal Haasan.

Rahman’s musical legacy includes hits like Roja, Dil Se Re, Chhaiyya Chhaiyya, Jai Ho, and many more, making him one of the most revered composers in Indian cinema.
