Chief Minister Siddaramaiah honored Kittur Rani Channamma as a symbol of self-respect during the inauguration of the Kittur Vijayotsava Jyoti on Wednesday. This event, organized by the District Administration, Belagavi, Kittur Development Authority, and the Department of Kannada and Culture, marks the 200th anniversary of Kittur’s victory. The Chief Minister announced that the torch for the Kittur Victory Festival would begin its journey from this location, passing through all districts before reaching Kittur.
Rani Channamma is celebrated for her patriotism and courage in standing up against British rule. Alongside her, Sangolli Rayanna was also a significant figure in her army, and they both fiercely opposed paying taxes to the British. The Chief Minister assured that the government would provide necessary assistance and grants for the Kittur Utsav and its development.
Siddaramaiah also acknowledged that October 2nd is not only Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday but also that of Lal Bahadur Shastri. He emphasized the importance of conveying Gandhi’s ideals to today’s youth, highlighting how Gandhi led the freedom struggle peacefully from 1920 to 1947.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Ministers Priyank Kharge, Satish Jarakiholi, H.K. Patil, and Lakshmi Hebbalkar, along with Chief Secretary Dr. Shalini Rajneesh and Kittur MLA Baba Saheba Patil.
