West Indies batsman Nicholas Pooran made headlines by breaking the world record for the most runs scored in T20 cricket within a calendar year, previously held by Pakistan’s Mohammed Rizwan. Pooran set this milestone while playing for the Trinbago Knight Riders in the 2024 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) against the Barbados Royals.
In this match, Pooran showcased his impressive form with a quick-fire innings of 27 runs off just 15 balls, featuring four fours and a six, achieving a striking rate of 180.00. He was supported by strong performances from Kieron Pollard (42 runs), Keacy Carty (32 runs), and Andre Russell (31 runs), helping the Knight Riders to a total of 175/7. They successfully defended this score, restricting Barbados to 145/9.
Pooran has amassed a remarkable 2,059 runs in 66 T20 matches this year, averaging 42.02 with a strike rate of 160.85, including 14 half-centuries and a high score of 98. In the CPL alone, he has scored 312 runs in nine innings at an average of 39.00, ranking as the fourth-highest run-scorer in the tournament.
Previously, Rizwan held the record with 2,036 runs in 2021. With Pooran’s extraordinary performances across various leagues this year, many are left wondering if he is currently the best T20 batter in the game. Only time will tell if he can continue this exceptional run.
