Not mocking Daivaradhane tradition, only telling world about Koragajja: Director Attavar

Must read

Sahitya Akademi award-winning author and director Sudheer Attavar has addressed objections to his upcoming film about Koragajja Daiva, stating that he is also a devotee. ‘I wanted to tell the world the incredible story of this Daiva, a key deity in the Daivaradhane tradition of Tulunadu,’ Attavar explained.

A group in Karnataka, particularly from Tulunadu, has called for a ban on the film, claiming it mocks their beliefs. Attavar recounted challenges during production, including attacks that halted filming and caused significant financial losses. He emphasized that mocking the Daivaradhane tradition was not his intention and noted he sought permission from Koragajja by performing a ‘buta kola’ before shooting.

The film, set for a December release, is based on 18 months of research into the many conflicting stories surrounding Koragajja. Attavar consulted various experts, including tribal community members who claim to be part of Koragajja’s family.

Producer Trivikrama Sapalya quickly agreed to back the project after hearing the story, even gifting Attavar a car upon completion of filming. Notable figures from the Kannada film industry, along with Bollywood actor Kabir Bedi, who plays a king, are also part of the cast. Attavar expressed confidence in Bedi’s suitability for the role, stating, ‘I could not think of anyone but him.’
