The G4 Ministers from Brazil, Germany, India, and Japan recently emphasized that reforming the Security Council is crucial for making the United Nations more relevant to today’s geopolitical landscape. Meeting on September 23 during the 79th United Nations General Assembly, the foreign ministers—Mauro Vieira from Brazil, Annalena Baerbock from Germany, S. Jaishankar from India, and Yoko Kamikawa from Japan discussed the state of the multilateral system and the need for UN reforms.
In a joint statement, they acknowledged the significant challenges facing the multilateral framework and stressed that a comprehensive reform of the Security Council is vital for aligning the UN with contemporary realities. They also expressed support for the upcoming Summit of the Future in September, which aims to advocate for urgent Security Council reforms.
The ministers highlighted Brazil’s initiative to promote global governance reforms and emphasized the importance of increasing the participation of developing countries in the Security Council. They called for better representation of under-represented regions, including Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. Additionally, they expressed concern over the lack of progress in ongoing negotiations regarding reforms and stressed the need for text-based discussions to move forward.
