The Trinamool Congress (TMC) achieved a clean sweep in the November 13 bypolls, winning all six Assembly seats. The party’s victory in Madarihat was especially notable, where Jayprakash Toppo defeated BJP’s Rahul Lohar by a significant margin of 28,168 votes. This marks TMC’s first-ever win in Madarihat, previously held by the BJP since 2016. The seat became vacant after the BJP legislator Manoj Tigga moved to the Alipurduar Lok Sabha seat.
In Sitai, Sangita Roy triumphed with a massive 1,30,156-vote margin, far surpassing the 2021 victory of her husband, the former TMC legislator. Sitai had also gone for bypolls after her husband resigned following his election to the Cooch Behar Lok Sabha seat. In Haroa, TMC’s Seikh Rabiul Islam won by the largest margin of 1,31,388 votes.
Other wins included Falguni Singhababu in Taldangra, Sujoy Hazra in Medinipur, and Sanat Dey in Naihati, all securing commanding victories over their BJP rivals. The bypolls followed the resignation of former legislators who had been elected to the Lok Sabha earlier this year.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee thanked the voters for their support, emphasizing that their blessings would inspire the party to continue its work in the future.
