Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar visited the family of 11-year-old Niranjan, who died after a gate at a BBMP playground collapsed. During the visit, he handed over a compensation check of Rs 10 lakh to the boy’s parents.
Shivakumar, along with Health Minister Dinesh Gundurao, expressed condolences at the family’s residence in Malleswaram. In a media statement, he mentioned that the compensation included Rs 5 lakh from the BBMP and Rs 5 lakh from the Block Congress party.
He commended the family for their decision to donate the boy’s eyes, describing it as a noble act despite their difficult circumstances. ‘We should appreciate their choice to contribute to society,’ he said, adding that the Congress party would support the family and that Gundurao’s foundation would assist with the education of the deceased boy’s sister.
Shivakumar acknowledged that the incident highlighted negligence on the part of the BBMP and stated that a report on the situation in other parks and grounds had been requested. ‘Gate inspections will be conducted in other parts of Bengaluru,’ he confirmed.
