A Sakunthala, famously known as ‘CID Sakunthala’ following her breakout role in the 1970 film ‘CID Shankar’, passed away on Tuesday evening in Bengaluru at the age of 84. She had been battling an age-related illness, according to reports.
Sakunthala was a beloved figure in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam cinema during the 1970s. She began her career as a dancer in films like ‘Kaithi Kannayiram’ (1960) and ‘Kai Koduttha Dheivam’ (1964). She later took on acting roles in critically acclaimed movies such as ‘Thavapudhalavan’ (1972) and ‘Cinema Paithiyam’ (1975).
Her last appearance in a film was in ‘Ponmaanai Thedi’ in 1998, after which she transitioned to television. Sakunthala became a familiar face on TV, featuring in popular serials on Sun TV and Star Vijay, including ‘Kasthuri’ and ‘Tamil Selvi.’ Throughout her career, she was part of over 600 films and 9 television serials.
