India has increased its support for Namibia to improve food security. A shipment of 1,000 metric tons of rice has left Nhava Sheva Port in Maharashtra, headed for Namibia. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that this aid is part of India’s humanitarian assistance, aimed at helping Namibia in response to recent droughts.
The El Nino-induced drought has worsened food security in Namibia, affecting crop and livestock production, causing food price increases, and leading to unemployment. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Report estimates that 1.4 million people in Namibia, nearly half the population, are expected to face severe food insecurity from September 2024 to March 2025.
India and Namibia maintain a strong relationship, with India being viewed as a reliable partner. Indian support during Namibia’s liberation struggle is remembered positively by Namibian leaders.
