Social activist Sapna Singh, along with students from First Class College NSS, raised awareness about the rising trend of student suicides in India. The event took place at Bashyam Circle Signal in Sadashiva Nagar.
Sapna Singh addressed the media, emphasizing the troubling rise in student suicides. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, the number of student suicides, which was around 6,000 in 2022, has doubled to 13,044 in 2023. Despite a slight decline in the population of individuals aged 0-24, student suicides have increased significantly over the past decade.
Delhi recorded the highest number of student suicides at 2,760, followed by Chennai with 2,699, Bengaluru with 2,292, and Mumbai with 1,436. Together, these four cities account for 35.5% of the total suicides reported across 53 metros.
The suicide rate in 2022 rose to 12.4 per 100,000 people, the highest in 56 years. Singh noted that one in seven individuals aged 15-24 suffers from chronic mental illness, with only 41% finding effective solutions. She stressed that suicide is not the solution and urged students to seek help and value their lives.
