On Wednesday, Patiala House Court rejected Neelam Azad’s bail plea in connection with the Parliament security breach case from last year. The court, led by Additional Sessions Judge Hardeep Kaur, determined that there are substantial reasons to believe the allegations against Azad are likely true, making it unsuitable to grant her bail.

This was Azad’s second attempt to secure bail. The court noted that charges of conspiracy are involved, suggesting her actions cannot be considered in isolation. Special Public Prosecutor Akhand Pratap Singh argued that strong evidence exists against Azad, including material related to the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), which indicates her significant involvement in the offence. He also highlighted concerns about potential risks if she were released, including tampering with evidence or influencing witnesses.

In response, Azad’s lawyer, Advocate Balraj Malik, argued that she is falsely accused and not involved in the security breach. Malik noted that Azad has been in judicial custody since December 14, 2023, the investigation is complete, and the charge sheet has been filed, although results for some forensic tests are still pending. He criticized the use of UAPA to suppress dissent and questioned the prosecution’s claims.

The Delhi Police had previously filed a detailed charge sheet against six individuals, including Azad, who are accused of entering Parliament and disrupting a live session on December 13, 2023. All six accused remain in judicial custody.
