Metro Yellow Line Undergoes Critical Trial Runs; Extension to Hosur Faces Opposition

Must read

The Metro Yellow Line, connecting Bommasandra to RV Road in Bengaluru, is currently undergoing a series of critical trials focusing on weight capacity oscillation and Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD). This trial run, conducted by officials from the Lucknow-based Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO), will last for the next ten days. The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) stated that technical approval will follow once RDSO submits its pilot report to the Railway Board.

During these tests, various procedures are being conducted. Load tests involve filling sandbags in the metro train, while control tests use water-filled coaches. The trials include acceleration and deceleration controls, as well as brake tests. The Yellow Line stretches 19 km with 16 stations, and currently, one driverless six-car train is undergoing trials, with additional trains expected soon. Officials anticipate that commercial operations will begin by the end of the year.

The project also includes plans to extend the Yellow Line from Bommasandra to Hosur, a 23 km stretch that crosses into Tamil Nadu. This extension is part of South India’s first inter-state metro project. However, it faces strong opposition from urban transport experts and pro-Kannada groups, who argue that the expansion may benefit Tamil Nadu more than Bengaluru and could impact local businesses adversely.
